COAT 

In partnership with Carbon Jacked COAT has undergone a comprehensive carbon footprint assessment to measure, understand and report their emissions in line with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol.

COAT updates its footprint assessment on an annual basis in line with best practice and uses this to take significant steps to reduce their emissions wherever possible. They are also taking action on their downstream Scope 3 emissions by supporting customers to recycle their unused paint.

Under the GHG Protocol, companies are only responsible for their core Scope 1 & 2 emissions, but COAT has taken the decision to broaden the scope of its carbon footprint assessment to include their Scope 3 emissions (i.e. the indirect emissions from their business), which means a more detailed and accurate assessment of their environmental impact.

COAT’s carbon footprint assessment was carried out using the proprietary Carbon Jacked methodology, which is based on the GHG Protocol. For their assessment, the specific GHG Protocol standards used were the Corporate Standard and the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard.

Having taken extensive action to reduce their environmental impact, COAT have gone even further to directly invest in verified nature projects.

Following their expert carbon footprint assessment, COAT has taken the voluntary decision to double offset (offsetting twice the amount of their carbon footprint) their unavoidable emissions and become ‘Climate Positive’, including all of their Scope 1 & 2 emissions, as well as the key elements of their Scope 3 emissions, including their purchased goods, upstream and downstream shipping, business travel, employee commuting and homeworking, as well as indirect emissions from fuel and energy use.

To do this they have purchased carbon credits in the award-winning Ntakata Mountains project in Tanzania. Not only does this project combat climate change, but it also contributes to multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including through investments in infrastructure and healthcare, creating jobs, increasing access to education, and improving gender equality. The project protects 216,994 hectares of forest in the Greater Mahale ecosystem of Western Tanzania, which is home to endangered species such as the eastern chimpanzee.

This project is certified under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), which is one of the leading international standards for the certification of carbon credits.
