Green growth?, ocean cleanups, river rewilding... summing up this week's biggest climate news so you don't have to 👇
P.s. we thought we’d leave out Truss sinking the economy as it’s hard to have missed. But her latest environmental policies are coming under a pretty unprecedented level of criticism from the National Trust, WWF, RSPB, Wildlife Trust and many more. This ‘attack on nature’ is certainly worth knowing about.
- Planetary Politics: Labour goes big on green growth and energy security. They’ve set out plans for an £8bn ‘national wealth fund’ to invest in the green industrial transition, fossil fuel-free energy by 2030 and the creation of a government-owned renewable energy company called Great British Energy.
- Tantalising Tech: The Ocean Cleanup are planning to clean the entire Great Pacific Garbage Patch – containing 1 million kg of plastic pollution – using their newly developed tech. Watch their video showing their incredible visions for the future.
- Naughty Nature: Europe’s largest river restoration and rewilding project reverses 500 years of environmental damage. The project decreases flood risks and the Dutch river has become a biodiversity hotspot – sounds like a win-win. Certainly better than the rampant raw sewage approach the UK is currently taking with its waterways... safe to say it's hardly 'nature positive'.
