What on Earth is Greenwashing?
Explainer Series
What on earth is Greenwashing?
Greenwashing - this is probably a term you've heard loads, but what on earth is it?
Basically.... It's eco bullsh*t
What on earth is greenwashing?
Greenwashing, in a nutshell, is when a company tries to market itself or its products as more environmentally friendly than they are.
Making false green claims; rather than trying to be more sustainable, they try to look more sustainable just to get more money.
Examples of greenwashing
- Fast fashion - companies touting themselves as 'protectors of mother earth'.
- Oil companies - promoting renewables when they're still investing in new fossil fuel projects.
How to spot greenwashing
Not all businesses are bad and not all of their claims are bullsh*t. But, it's often hard to tell the difference.
Ultimately, you just have to research who to buy from.
And - if you want a short hack - if they present themselves as perfect, they're almost definitely not.
